5 Cheap Ways To Decorate Your Home

You don’t have to spend a fortune or hire help to make your home a beautiful and relaxing place to be. Here are ten ways to improve your surroundings, all by yourself.

Rearrange your furniture.

Be brave. Try something new. Is all your furniture up against your walls? Pull some out. Try putting things on diagonal angles. Move your sofa away from the wall. If your room is larger, try making two areas instead of one large one. In your living room have a TV area with your TV, sofa and coffee table. Create a sitting area off to the side with an end table and two chairs. If you want to try something before you do it in real life you can download a room design program.

Create a focal wall.

Choose a contrasting colour to your current colour scheme and paint one wall. Try putting contrasting furniture or wall art there to enhance the effect. Be sure to use a wall you can see when you walk into the room, and use that colour sparingly in other areas of the room to keep your eye moving around the room and to tie it all together.

Bring in Nature.

house plants

Adding plants to your room can bring in colour as well as filling in gaps. In the case of real plants, they also make oxygen and can help you feel more relaxed. There are also many good quality silk plants and flowers that look real and come with the added benefit of not needing to be fed or watered or dying.

Don’t forget your floor.

Using area rugs can either accent your room or add interest as a focal point. If your colour scheme is neutral and you’re ready for some punch, use a large colourful (or patterned) rug. You can use area rugs under tables and beds, and also to divide areas.

Use your wall space.

Mirrors hung opposite windows will reflect light and help your room appear larger and more open. They can also be hung in a group as art. Using prints, paintings or posters will add visual interest and can also bring in texture to your room. Frames come in all styles and materials as well. Wood frames can add texture and warmth whereas shiny metal or plastic frames will add light as they’re reflective.

Create a vignette.

Placing a few similar items in a group (candlesticks, picture frames, or figurines) will add interest to a small area such as a nightstand, end table or console. They bring your personality into your home and you’ll feel more comfortable surrounded by things you love.

Couches need love too.

If your couch came with throw pillows, they’re probably the same fabric as the couch. That means your couch is a big blob in your living room. Adding pillows in contrasting colours and a variety of textures will add some “wow” to your room.

Light it up.

Changing your lamps and/or ceiling lights can change the look and feel of your room. There are so many styles and materials to choose from, and simply updating the light sources in your room can bring your room some personality

Cover it up.

Throws come in all kinds of colours and textures and can help update your furniture or hide its flaws. Remember that a room with a lot of texture in it feels warm and cosy. Plan to bring textures into your living room and bedroom.

Throw it out!

The easiest way to make your home look clean, organized and inviting is to de-clutter. File your papers, answer your mail, put your bills on your desk, and recycle those magazines and newspapers when you’re finished reading them. And if you haven’t used/looked at something in the past year give it to charity or throw it away! An uncluttered room is a well-styled room.
